My journey to becoming EDTC 300's newest rockstar has come to an end and the question is, am I EDTC 300's newest rockstar? The short answer, no not yet. I'm definitely still working on it, but I can't say that learning the guitar was going to be as easy as I thought. Before starting this class, I had tried to learn the guitar multiple times and quit every time. I do not like being bad at things, but being put in the position where I had to be bad at something before getting better really helped me keep pushing through. The whole point of this assignment was to learn something new using online resources. Using online resources to learn something complicated like the guitar is hard. There is no one beside you telling you if it sounds right or if you are completely wrong. It's all kind of a guessing game comparing how you sound to a video of someone else doing the same thing. I had online resources that really helped and others that I gave up on instantly because they completely discouraged me. TikTok was not a good resource for me. I did not get enough out of it because it was just too short. Fender Tune was super helpful to tune my guitar and to see the correct finger placement for each chord. I would recommend that app to anyone. Marty Music on YouTube was also super helpful. He breaks everything down perfectly for beginners and his videos are separated into mini lessons that you can watch at whatever speed you would like. When I become more confident, I moved onto Ultimate Guitar which is definitely more complicated but, doing the previous lessons with Marty Music really helps. I like that on Ultimate Guitar, you can filter the results to cater towards the difficulty (I always selected Absolute Beginner). Last week, my goal was to be able to seamlessly weave my chords together in the song All Around You by Sturgill Simpson. I was not 100% successful but I think that my intro was pretty successful. Here is the video I took to document my learning for this final week of EDTC 300:

Learning something new is always hard. In this day and age, we are so lucky to have the internet as such a convenient resource to be able to learn new things, but is it really all that easy? I struggle with not being good at things right off the bat. I like to have that immediate feeling of satisfaction when I learn something new and I've learned that doing this all by myself is really hard. I love the convenience of the whole idea. I can literally do it from my bed instead of driving somewhere for lessons. At the same time, I struggle because I'm never 100% sure that I am doing it correctly. I never know if what I am playing sounds right or if I am at the correct pace or tune. When you search how to play the guitar there is so many different resources that you can use. I found that the best resources for me were, Fender, Ultimate Guitar, and YouTube. I tried TikTok very briefly, but I realized very quickly that it does not work for me. I can't really see what they are doing and it is so short that I have trouble grasping what they are trying to teach me. This week, I did not really see a lot of growth as compared to last. Instead of taking videos of what I was accomplishing. I took pictures to document my time spent on this task. I wanted to take pictures of where I was holding my hands and compare it to other pictures and see if I have the correct placement. Sometimes something that simple is just as beneficial as taking videos of my accomplishments that really had not progressed much from last week to this week. So the question is, can you really learn how to play the guitar only using online resources? I'd say yes you can, but I think that you also need someone else as an aid to tell you how you are doing and how you can improve. When I am finished this course, I plan to continue to try and learn how to play the guitar, but I am going to consult with my brother to see where he thinks I can improve. My goal for next week: try to seamlessly weave my chords together.
How am I going to do this? I plan on working on moving my fingers from chord to chord at faster paces each day for about 10 minutes a day.
In addition to this, I thought I would share a really great app that I use to tune my guitar and that I use to learn new chords: Fender Guitar Tuner. This makes tuning my guitar so easy because it tells you when you need to tune up or down and it tells you when you are in tune.
